Joseph Hall, Chorley, Lancashire

“Completely out of the blue I suffered a heart attack at the age of 24. I feel as though I have been given a second chance”

22 years ago, at the age of just 24, Joseph suffered what most young, fit, healthy people think will never happen to them; a heart attack. It was a huge attack, leading to his spending three weeks in the coronary care unit at Royal Preston Hospital, Lancashire.

“Before my heart attack I had no indication of any health problems at all; in fact I had represented my Regiment in running and orienteering and did ultra distance running and all sorts of sports including mountaineering, white water kayaking and skiing”

Following the attack, doctors noticed nodules on Joseph’s knuckles, elbows, knees, and Achilles. These were all cholesterol deposits, a tell-tale sign of FH. These had not been picked up at his Army medicals. In fact, he’d had nodules on his elbows surgically removed approximately six months prior to the heart attack.

“My son, Oliver, has also been diagnosed with FH, which upsets me more than anything that’s wrong with me, but thanks to advice from HEART UK, we are able to manage the condition. He is only 18, and says it doesn’t affect him greatly, but still it’s a problem I wish he didn’t have.”
