QRISK®2-2012 was developed in the UK but is used internationally.  It is an updated version of the original QRISK® algorithm but now takes into account ethnicity and diabetes to help more accurately estimate the risk for each individual patient.

It is based on information collected between 1993 and 2010 and includes data on over 10 million patients registered with 550 general practices in the UK.  It is updated annually.  The algorithm includes information on the following risk factors:

  • Age
  • Sex
  • cholesterol/HDL ratio
  • blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • Smoking status
  • Self assigned ethnicity
  • Family History of premature coronary heart disease in a first degree relative under the age of 60
  • Deprivation (measured using the Townsend deprivation score)
  • Blood Pressure Treatment
  • Body Mass Index
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Atrial Fibrillation

A score of 10% or more indicates a need for further intervention to lower risk
