Whole Earth Hi Oleic Crunchy Peanut Butter has met the stringent criteria, checks and balances operated by HEART UK’s product approval scheme.
Grown in exactly the same way as standard peanuts and with all the natural protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and scrummy taste, Whole Earth Hi Oleic peanut butter has the added bonus of higher-than-usual levels (that’s the ‘hi’ bit) of monounsaturated fats (that’s the ‘oleic’ bit), which help support normal cholesterol levels.
It’s the very same ‘good’ fat that makes the Mediterranean diet so heart healthy. In fact, hi-oleic peanuts contain around 30% more monounsaturated fats than standard peanuts, putting them right up there with olive oil and avocados. Meeting HEART UK's product approval criteria
Peanuts are in themselves a heart healthy food being rich in unsaturated fats, plant fibre, vitamins and minerals and containing a range of other beneficial plant nutrients such as plant sterols and polyphenols.
The proportion of monounsaturated fats to polyunsaturated fats varies from cultivar* to cultivar of peanuts. Hi Oleic peanuts are a specific cultivar of peanuts which are guaranteed to contain high levels of the monounsaturated fat oleic acid. Under EU legislation this product is able to make the following health claim:
“contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels”
HEART UK has not assessed other products in the Whole Earth range. Wessanen, the makers and distributors of Whole Earth products and HEART UK have committed to working with together. Our intention is to move towards reviewing other products within the range in the near future. If these products are approved then they will also be eligible to bear the charity’s approval logo.
*Cultivar – refers to a plant or grouping of plants selected for desirable characteristics that can be maintained by propagation.
